Gold-Buying Party Planned Saturday in Richmond Heights

A gold-buying party is scheduled for Saturday at VFW Post 3500 in Richmond Heights. The Better Business Bureau advises consumers to shop around before selling their gold.

KMJM radio personality Tammie Holland will host a gold-buying party Saturday at VFW Post 3500 in Richmond Heights. The event is happening in cooperation with The Gold Refinery.

Holland's mother, Diane Johnson, held a party Thursday night with the same company.

“They have a gold-buying party concept.” Johnson said. “Persons bring their gold to a party. It’s a social gathering. Girlfriends, whoever, get together. We buy their gold, then we offer them an opportunity to have a party of their own.”

Those who hold a party with The Gold Refineryu get 10 percent of the value of the gold sold, she said. If someone signs up to host their own party, the original host gets five percent of proceeds from that event, too.

“It’s an opportunity for people to make money, and who doesn’t want to make money?” Johnson said. “I went to my very first party. I had some old gold and got $950 for it. I went to a second party, and I got $430 for it. And then they said, 'Well, if you have a party, you could get 10 percent from all of your guests who sell their gold,' and I said, “Wow—that’s a win-win.'”

Johnson said she is in training to give the parties. On Saturday, managers from The Gold Refinery will weigh gold and do all the transactions at the VFW hall, and they’ll pay cash on the spot.

The Better Business Bureau offered tips for selling gold on its website earlier this month. Here are a few of them:
