Is it ever okay to open my spouse’s mail?

In a word, no.  Unless you have a power of attorney from your spouse or you are the court appointed guardian for your spouse, you cannot open his or her mail.

Federal law prohibits anyone from opening mail addressed to anyone other than himself or herself.  Marriage is not an exception to this law.
