Movie Review - Stories We Tell

Stories We Tell ***½ (PG-13) Sarah Polley wrote and directed this fascinating documentary in which she interviews a number of members of a family and others, eliciting their versions of certain past events. Once the primary topic becomes clear, we learn why Polley picked these people and the time for exploration. What flows from those interview snippets is an unusual interlacing of information and emotions that becomes ever more engrossing. The less you know about the subject beyond this intentionally non-informative commentary, the more you’ll enjoy the unfolding of the truth(s) behind the elicited memories, and the path of Polley’s interaction with her sources. Had I known where she was going, I wouldn’t have been quite as moved by the viewing experience. Don’t let others tell you more than this before you check it out. (5/31/13)
