Movie Review - Spies in Disguise
Family-friendly animated spy comedy should please all ages
Spies in Disguise *** (out of 5) (PG) This animated espionage comedy works quite nicely at achieving its goal - entertaining all ages with various aspects of its action and dialog. We’ve all seen plenty of films based on unlikely cop/buddy pairings, whether in comedies or dramas, or mixes of the two. There’s nothing unique about a superspy forced to team up with a tech nerd against a mega-villain, either. But having a James Bondian hero (voiced by Will Smith) cope with being turned into a pigeon is venturing into new territory.
Our protagonist is actually the nerdy Walter (Tom Holland) who we meet as an unappreciated child prodigy, before growing up to be a tech designer for our top intelligence agency. Smith’s Lance Sterling is the superstar among field agents. As usual for such fare, Sterling always works alone, so he resents having to pair up with Lab Boy for this latest and greatest threat to the world. The whole pigeon angle works quite nicely by introducing a few other birds for comedic and potential merchandising value. There’s also a bit of moralizing, as Sterling’s penchant for violent solutions clashes with Walter’s desire for peaceful resolutions. Guess who’s going to prevail on that debate?
The art design is superb, with well-drawn characters, colorful settings and frenetic action. If anything, several scenes may be over-the-top on one’s hectic scale. There’s nothing that will scare the young ‘uns, and much that will satisfy their parents in this family-friendly holiday option. (12/25/19)
