Notre Dame Contacts MRH Lineman Thompson

But despite catching the attention of that school and others, Maplewood Richmond Heights High School junior Antar Thompson said he's focusing on his academic work.

coach Brandon Gregory said his junior lineman Antar Thompson is a baby.

If that’s so, at 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds, he’s a baby who knows how to block pretty well. At a weeklong camp at the University of Missouri (MU) this summer, for the whole camp. He came out of that summer with serious interest from MU and Kansas State University.

Just recently, Gregory received an envelope from Notre Dame for Thompson.

“I told him that’s kind of big-time,” Gregory said. “I know K-State and Mizzou are very interested. It’s only mail, but when I got that Notre Dame envelope for him, it was pretty impressive.”

Thompson is keeping his priorities straight. He knows how important grades are.

“I’ve got a lot of schools calling, but I’m not getting too hyped about them, I’m trying to take care of my schoolwork,” he said.

Gregory said defensive coach J.C. Kime is working with Thompson to teach him some fundamental skills they’ll be looking for at the next level. This summer, Thompson also worked out with his older brother, who plays football at Hinds Community College in Mississippi.

Thompson has seven tackles, four assists, two sacks and one fumble recovery in the season so far. He’s looking forward to Friday’s game with St. Genevieve.

“If we play them like we’re supposed to, it’s not going to be a problem,” he said.

“The sky’s the limit for Thompson if he does what he’s supposed to do,” Gregory said.

Thompson seems to like Gregory, too.

“Gregory is a cool coach to have.” Thompson said. “A lot of older coaches are a lot stricter. He’s a lot more laid back, but you still have to do your job. If you mess up, that’s when he turns into the old coach that you don’t want.”
