An international audience of more than 350 computer scientists, digital imagers, crop scientists, toxicologists, behavioral scientists, quantitative geneticists and genome scientists gathered for three days in St. Louis at the Danforth Centerβs 15thΒ AnnualΒ Fall Symposium, PhenoDays, Imaging and Robotics for 21stΒ Century Science.
Leading scientistsΒ from the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, and Australia shared insights into a variety of approaches that use imaging to improve and accelerate scientific understanding of photosynthesis, biomass and growth, root development and dissecting complex traits.Β Several of the presentations addressed advances in advanced phenomics and high-throughput phenotyping platforms that are generating increased biological understanding and the potential for applications that will be useful for improving crop yield. Β
βThe last decade has seen an explosion of digital profiling techniques on the molecular scale. A similar surge in digital profiling of phenotypic outputs driven by advances in imaging and robotics is underway and will grow rapidly over the next decade,β saidΒ Todd Mockler, Geraldine J. and Robert L. Virgil Distinguished Investigator at the Danforth Center, one of the event organizers. βRecent advances allow phenotypes to be measured quantitatively and in high-throughput, enabling downstream analytics and the derivation biological knowledge.

Β βThe Fall Symposium was a fantastic to be a part of and provided a great forum for me to learn about what is occurring here in the US. This was an opportunity to meet and network with the key players in this industry and discuss similar challenges we are working to solve,β stated Dr. Bettina Berger, Postdoctoral Fellow, The Plant Accelerator, University of Adelaide in South Australia, βI was impressed with the high-quality presentations and entire event.β
Attendees had the opportunity to network and learn from other industries and experts in the field of robotics and phenomics throughout the three-day event.
