Alice Conway Will Receive Legacy of Leadership Award From St. Louis Society for the Blind & Visually Impaired

Born blind, Alice received her law degree from Washington University and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature in the same year.

MARCH 4, 2015, St. Louis, Missouri... Alice Conway, an attorney at Monsanto who was born blind and earned a Ph.D. in addition to her degree in law, will receive the Legacy of Leadership Award from St. Louis Society for the Blind & Visually Impaired.

Society President David Ekin, ACSW, LCSW, said, β€œAlice is remarkably talented person who is a tireless advocate for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, their families and all others with disabilities. Her involvement with the Society has set a standard for volunteer leadership and inspired all who know her.”

Ms. Conway has been involved with the Society since 2002 having served as Chair of the Board, Chair of Strategic Planning and Chair of the Policy Committee.

She is currently Advisor to General Counsel for Monsanto where she provides expertise in commercial and employment law. While at Monsanto she has handled a full range of non-union employment matters, Code of Business Conduct issues and has advised on privacy, competitive intelligence, risk assessment and other matters. She has also presented to the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Born blind, Alice received her law degree from Washington University and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature in the same year. She also studied English, French, German, Spanish and Latin literature in the original, all in Braille.

Ms. Conway is a recipient of the Missouri Lawyers Weekly Enterprise Award and will be honored on March 19th by the Department of Arts & Sciences at Washington University with its Distinguished Alumni Award. She also has received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Ladue Horton Watkins High School.

She is an accomplished vocalist who studied at The Julliard School in New York City. She sings in Our Lady of Pillar Catholic Church choir and with The Morning Etude Club. She serves on the Board of Opera of the Ozarks, the Opera Committee of Missouri Federation of Music Clubs and the membership committee of Washington University’s William Greenleaf Eliot Society.

Founded in 1911, the not-for-profit St. Louis Society for the Blind & Visually Impaired enhances independence, empowers individuals and enriches the lives of people who are blind and visually impaired and their families. Its caring, committed staff provides specialized Vision Rehabilitation, Orientation & Mobility, Adaptive Education, Assistive Technology, Children’s Services and Support Services.

The Society provides older adults who are newly visually impaired or blind due to age-related eye conditions with home-based services, specialized agency services and community activities. It also renders services to school-age students in Illinois and Missouri. It is the only agency of its kind serving greater St. Louis, and the second oldest of its kind west of the Mississippi River.
