Mathew's Kitchen serves up for the kids at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center
ST. LOUIS (July 19, 2012) - Now that he has an established restaurant and a healthy family, chef Mathew Unger is “paying it forward” by giving back to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.
Unger is hosting “A Glennon Gourmet Inspired Food and Wine Event” to benefit SSM Cardinal Glennon. The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.
August 12 at his restaurant, Mathew’s Kitchen, 5625 Hampton Ave.
Just five years ago, well-known St. Louis chef Unger was cooking by day and racing to the medical center at night to join his wife Maggie as their son Eddie battled a medical crisis. Eddie was born with enlarged kidneys more than three times their normal size which required surgery in his early months.

Complications after the surgery forced 8-month-old Eddie to have a second surgery and a stay in the hospital for more than two weeks. Thanks to the skilled staff of SSM Cardinal Glennon and many long nights of prayers, Eddie will turn five on July 10. The family was also blessed with
2-year old Kallie.
Mathew says the employees of the medical center, the City of St. Louis, family and friends all helped them pull through some very hard times and now he wants to give back. When the owner of Del Pietro’s decided to retire and lease their building, Mathew’s dream came true, as he could now establish his own restaurant and support his South City neighborhood. With a new Napa Wine Country motif and a “comfort food with a twist” menu, he is happy to be able to give back to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

“I want to make sure that Cardinal Glennon will continue to have the resources to keep doing what they do,” Mathew said.
At the event, chefs from Liluma, Sqwires and Racquet Club of Ladue, along with Unger will prepare Glennon Guild inspired dishes with four stations of dining where you will visit each renowned chef in a section of Mathew’s Kitchen. Unger, a sommelier/chef, will provide wine pairings to go with all the selected dishes.
The cost for the evening is $75 a person/$125 per couple. Glennon Gourmet Cookbooks will be available as well. For reservations visit glennon.org/mathewskitchen. Space is limited - Proceeds benefit the kids at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.
