The biotechnology sector is one of the fastest growing knowledge-based sectors in St. Louis and is expected to play a key role in shaping the region’s rapidly changing economy. St. Louis is coming of age as a biotechnology center primarily in the plant and life sciences arena mainly because of its close proximity to two-thirds of U.S. agricultural production.
St. Louis Community College’s Workforce Solutions Group will host a special workshop during which industry experts will offer their insights 8:30 a.m.-noon Monday, Feb. 4, at the Bio-Research Development and Growth (BRDG) Park, 1005 N. Warson Road.
Kelly Gillespie, executive director of the Missouri Biotechnology Association, will discuss the current environment and its impact shaping the local economy. Gillespie will examine biotechnology growth and employment at the national and regional level and its ties to the local economy, based on the State of the St. Louis Workforce report for the biotechnology industry.

Ben Johnson, director of Special Projects at BioSTL, will discuss the state and challenge of diversity within the St. Louis biotechnology industry. The workshop also will include a conversation on educating the biotechnology workforce, along with an employer reaction panel and an interactive question-and-answer session from the audience.
Steve Long, St. Louis Community College’s associate vice chancellor for workforce solutions, and Richard Norris, director of STLCC’s Center for Plant and Life Sciences, also will participate in the workshop.
