Sheldon Harber, CFP®, is President of Asset Strategies, Inc. explains what is managing money and how it differs today than it has the past 30 years.

Q: What does managing money mean?

A: It really mean being a steward, it means being a fiduciary. We feel very responsible for the actions we take for our clients. We’re not here to get rich quick. Getting rich is always nice, but it’s more about being able to do the things you want to do in retirement and be able to do them successfully.

Q: Is there a different style managing money at present and a different style for managing it in the future?

A: In managing money, as long as I’ve been in the business which is over 30 years, it has constantly changed and evolved. And I think the biggest difference between the way we do things now and where most of the industry is that the industry is still following an approach that we feel doesn’t work anymore. There’s too much volatility and so you have to be prepared for the market going up and down. We find that most investment advisors prepare to help their clients when the market goes up.

Q: So what makes Asset Strategies, Inc. different than other firms?

A: We’re very much relationship-oriented. We think that a lot of firms are still living in the transaction world. So, our clients know that when they talk to us by phone or when they come in and meet with us, our objective is not to sell them something because the way we make money is, the better our clients do, the better we do.
