She was first in the 100 yard butterfly in 55:40 in the semifinals and she will swim in the championship round of the long-distance 500 yard freestyle, taking third place in 4:59.35. She is easily in striking distance of CeCe Etter of Parkway South and Kelley Tackett of Columbia Rockbridge to win that event.
She chose not to defend her crown in the 200 yard individual medley.
Bart Prosser, Northβs swim coach says Lundstrom is poised to win again and quipped that her swimming makes him βlook like a coaching genius.β
βShe (Heather) was seeded No. 1 going into the 100 yard butterfly, and sheβs still No. 1. I think sheβs got a good chance of winning that (Saturday) and the 500 (free) will be a great race.β
βThere are a lot of kids bunched together in the 500 free, and that race should be a lot of fun,β said Prosser.
βThis is all a great tribute to her. Sheβs put in a lot of great swims, and this would be a great way to finish her high school career,βsaid her coach.
Lundstrom is a swimmer of a few well chosen words.
βIβm excited to be in those finals. I am going home to get something to eat, then get to sleep,β she promised.
Are people gunning for her as a defending state champ? βNot really. Iβll just try and go out there and swim fast like I always try to do,β said Lundstrom.
Lundstrom will join her teammates Katharine Doering, junior; Carlie Manczuk, freshman; and Julia Saunders, sophomore in the 200 yard medley relay. They finished 13th in the semifinals with a time of 1:53.95. That puts them into the consolation round of the meet that gets underway at 3 oβclock Saturday.
