Many of Us Hate This Time of the Year

I am privileged to hear many private, hurtful stories of women and girls who have been emotionally, sexually and physically neglected and abused. Often, they have experienced abuse by parents, grandparents or others who are in authority. This time of the year is usually worse than other times. When a child does not feel safe they grow up experiencing emotional issues.

How does one grow up feeling, fearful, rejected and unloved by the very individuals with whom they depend. We develop coping mechanisms in order to survive. Many individuals simply retreat into a fantasy world of books or movies. Other coping skills that are employed are mood altering substances: drugs, alcohol, gambling, food, relationships and others.
