While flipping through last month's issue of "Black Enterprise" I came across an article written by the Publisher, Earl G. Graves, Sr. titled "The Need to Read". In reading this article I became bothered at learning the responses some adults gave for not making time to pick up a book.
According to Graves some of the responses are just flat out "I don't read books." "The last time I picked up a book? Maybe back in undergrad." "Books? I'm too busy to read."
This is during a time when technology provides so many easy and convenient ways to carry your own personal library on your mobile device, ipad, tablet or laptop.
The article goes on to state that the most successful investors, leaders in religion, sports, entertainment and even our very own President Barack Obama agree that reading is not only important but an invaluable way of continual learning and among other things provides the opportunity for personal growth. By not allowing yourself the chance of expanding your mind, you might as well agree that you're ok with mediocrity. I found myself inspired by this article and have made the conscious decision to not only read more, but include my family in on it. Taking more trips to the library, visiting local book stores like Subterranean Books (6275 Delmar), Left Bank Books, The Book House.
"To reject or forgo reading books is to embrace mediocrity-period." - Earl G. Graves, Sr.
