Amyotrophic Laterals Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. With voluntary muscle control progressively affected, individuals diagnosed with ALS experience a slow paralyzation and eventually may lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe. Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. Though ALS was first found in 1869, it wasn’t until 1939 that Major League Baseball Player Lou Gehrig brought the disease national attention, which is why ALS is now commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The average life expectancy of those diagnosed with ALS is two to five years.
