Vikings Hope To Avoid Trap Game Against Summit Friday Night

The Rockwood squad is looking for improvement after an opening week loss.

Coming off a three-point in Week 1, coach Bob Bunton sees a trap set for the Vikings at Rockwood Summit on Friday at 8 p.m. Friday morning, the school confirmed the start time was being moved back an hour, as some schools are doing because of expected high temperatures.

β€œSummit is a very scrappy and tough football team,” the 29-year coach said. β€œAnd if we go into their place living off last week’s win over SLUH, then we will learn a painful lesson in Week 2.”

While Parkway North (1-0) fumbled in its own territory in the closing minutes to give SLUH the opportunity to equalize late, the Vikings then marched downfield on their next possession with a steady dose of running plays. That set up a 36-yard field goal by Michael Bozath with two seconds left to give North a 38-35 victory.

The Vikings’ run attack was led by 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior Donavin Newsom (150 yards on 11 carries). The University of Missouri recruit also picked off a pass as a linebacker and returned it the length of the field for a score before leaving the game early with a tweaked knee.

Parkway North has remained healthy thus far, a status that Summit coach Mike Bellers eagerly awaits for his team this season. Summit Head Coach Mike Bellers said the Falcons (0-1) had β€œseveral key players” miss practice this week β€œin efforts to get past nagging injuries.”

Summit had five turnovers, four of which were fumbles, in a 36-7 loss to Kirkwood last week.

β€œOur offense has focused on ball security and getting off the ball with some forward push,” Bellers said. β€œNorth is another great team with more depth than our team. We will need to run the ball much better this week and stop the run when North has the ball.”

Summit had 47 yards on the ground last week, led by junior Ian McIntosh (21 yards on 10 carries). Senior quarterback Tyler Karst was 15-for-24 passing with 132 yards against Kirkwood, with eight of those catches going to senior Joe Schenck for 99 yards.
