2013 Missouri Legislative Session - Capitol Report II

As the frosty days of another Midwestern winter dusted the Missouri forests with glistening icy diamonds, Missourians traveled from far and wide to participate in the grandeur of Inauguration Day here at our State Capitol. The day marked another precious moment for which we owe thanks to our families and the wonderful people back home who have supported us during our profound journeys. The personal memories I have gained as a State Representative, as Majority Leader, and now as Speaker of the House, will forever travel with me as the years unfold. Thank you to all, again.

Amidst the pomp and circumstance, the events of this week included the passage of our House Rules, and your state government is officially reinstalled and ready to conduct the business of serving you. Please take a moment to peruse the information we have gathered. It is a great way for you to stay connected to the important and challenging issues facing our state and our communities.

Medicaid Transformation

Glancing at the headlines and editorials from around the state, it appears that a great deal of the political discourse revolves around a proposed drastic expansion of Medicaid. This expansion would cost taxpayers billions of dollars over the next several years. Although I remain committed to investing in our State’s healthcare system, especially for those who truly need our assistance: our seniors, the disabled, the truly destitute, and children who have no other resources; I am opposed to a knee jerk welfare expansion proposal because I believe Medicaid should be transformed.

Elections Legislation

House Speaker Pro Tem Jason Smith’s legislation to give the people a voice in filling statewide office vacancies is one step closer to House approval. Smith’s legislation, HB 110, was approved by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 11-1 by the House Elections Committee on Tuesday, Jan. 15. The bill is the first legislation to receive committee approval in the House this session and is one that is truly for and by the people and gives them the biggest voice in their state government.

Influenza Hits Missouri

As we enter what health professionals traditionally dub “peak flu season,” I want to urge you to learn to recognize the signs of the flu and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your family.

Personal News and Notes

It was with great joy that I welcomed members of my family and so many friends to the State Capitol for the Inauguration. It was exciting to share such a momentous experience with so many that are so close to me. Special thanks go to my wife, Suzanne, my daughters Katie and Abby, my parents, Dr. Bill and JoAnn Jones, my sister Amy, my nephew Roman, and my Aunt Jane, who traveled all the way from Clearwater Beach, FL. Aunt Jane said we are welcome to visit Florida any time we need to warm up!
