5 Steps To An Organized Linen Closet

Organizing tips for your linen closet. Professional organizer Susan Stewart of Perfectly Placed walks you through the process step by step.

Is your linen closet an overflowing nightmare? If it is, you are not alone but have no fear, it won’t be that way for long! Here are some strategies to get your linen closet organized and streamlined in no time.

  1. Start with emptying the closet and sorting them. You might use categories such as sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, medications,  hair accessories, bath  items, lotions and hair care.
  2. Once you have removed everything, vacuum out the space and wipe down the shelving. It  is always good to start with a fresh, clean space.
  3. Now go back to each category and purge. Once you see your like items together, it is easier to make a decision about what to keep and how many of something you really need. This is the time to be ruthless. Seriously, your child is not going to want to use their childhood sheets at college. Feel the freedom by letting go!
  4. Once the purging step is taken care of, it is time to strategize where the items will be stored within the given space. Store the most used items at eye level where they are easy to reach. If your kids need access to towels, make sure they are low enough for them to access. Infrequently used items like extra bedding can be stored on the highest shelf.
  5. Lastly, containerize. Containers give you boundaries of how much is enough of a particular item. They also keep you from over buying because you only have a defined amount of space to store something. Finally, they make everything look neater  because when you open the closet, you see matching containers rather than a hodge podge of bottles and items. Be sure to label each container so everyone knows where things need to be returned.
