An 11-Year-Old Shows National Leadership
Some talking heads say youngsters today are lazy and out of touch. But here's a chance to observe and learn from the efforts of an 11-year-old fifth grader.

Her name is Melissa Shepers, and she lives in Pittsburg, CA. I presume she is the result of her mother, who attended and the University of Missouri-Columbia. The mother's name was Dianna Lynn Weber, and when the Eureka school was built on Highway 109, Dianna was really active in the new stage auditorium. She brought things to life with activities in a variety of things relating to high school shows.
Melissa has carried this same drive into her five grades in Pittsburg, CA, where she was nominated by her school to be a part of the People to People program for leadership, which was developed under President Dwight Eisenhower. This year, the conference will be held in Washington, DC, with additional days in New York City and a visit to Philadelphia. She has raised $2,300 of the $4,000 needed to pay for the trip.
She has about 30 days left in her effort, so I guess that is why yesterday I received a call for help in the final days. She has had bake sales, garage sales, car washes and many other items, which are recorded in her website, which in itself tells the story better than I can from 2,200 miles away.

So, I decided to send its address through my blog so that you might also appreciate the effort of an 11-year-old to try to better her future and help the nation survive.
I invite you to see for yourself, and if you feel she deserves a little help, I am sure she will send you a certificate of thanks as I received.
