Solemnity of the Anniversary of the Dedication of Sacred Heart Church

This worship service celebrated the 10th anniversary in our new church building, which I wrote about in a prior blog.

Following is the liturgy used Sunday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the newest building at :

A reading from the book of the Prophet Ezekiel:

The angel led me to the gate which faces east, and there I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. I heard a sound like the roaring of many waters and the earth shone with his glory.

I fell prone as the glory of the Lord entered the temple by way of the gate which faces east, but spirit lifted me up and brought me to the inner court.

And I saw that the temple was filled with the glory of the Lord. Then I heard someone speaking to me from the temple, while the man stood beside me. The voice said to me: "Son of man, this is where my throne shall be, this is where I will set the soles of my feet; here I will dwell among the children of Israel forever. The Word of the Lord.

Then a reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians:

Brothers and sisters: You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the homes and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Then the Gospel A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew:

Jesus said to his disciples: "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt loses its taste, with what can be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand where it gives light to all in the house.

Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."

Although these words were developed centuries ago, it seems just that one turns east to find Sacred Heart, which is also built on a hill and is lighted with modern dust-to-dawn lighting, in keeping with these readings. The roaring of the waters might be the roaring of the road (Interstate 44 next door to the church).
