The native plantings and activities were led by Sue Madden. "All over the country, people are trying to replenish areas with native plants because they help filter the runoff water from roofs and don't need care," she said.

The goal of this particular patch is for scouts to learn which plants are best adapted to Missouri's climate and soils, as well as those that do not need irrigation.

After planting a variety of plants around the fire district's front sign, the scouts worked on individual, plant posters. Holland said the posters will be hung at Eureka Elementary to further share educational and informational points about native plants with other students.
