Smoke Detectors' Team Coming Saturday

Eureka Fire Protection District firefighters will visit the southeastern portion of Eureka on Saturday morning as part of the 23rd annual Smoke Detector Day they conduct.

Eureka Fire Deputy and Fire Marshal Scott Mullins said to date, local firefighting teams have visited more than 2,261 homes, installed 399 smoke alarms and provided 810-plus batteries.

The following Eurekan neighborhoods or streets in Jefferson County will be visited Saturday:

• Mirasol Subdivision
• West Trail Drive
• North Trail Drive
• Grandview Trail Drive
• Sunset Valley Drive

Firefighters and Eureka SAR and Eureka C.E.R.T. team members will be going door-to-door in the designated areas to ask homeowners if their smoke detectors are working. will ask to enter homes to check and inspect the smoke detectors.

If a new battery is needed, one will be installed, said Mullins. "If a home does not have a working smoke detector, a new one will be installed for free."

Smoke detectors were donated by Tech Electronics, in Eureka, and The Bibb Agency-Allstate Insurance; batteries were donated by Energizer.

Mullins said this smoke detector event is done twice each year to coincide with daylight savings time changes. "Remember on Saturday night, March 12, when you're changing your clocks to please change your detector batteries, too," he said.

Batteries can be obtained for smoke detectors at any of the three Eureka Fire Protection District fire stations.
