Wildwood City Council Member Retires

After serving three terms for six years on Wildwood's City Council, member David Sewell says it's all about learning and understanding the history of this municipality.

David Sewell, immediate former council member for Wildwood's Ward 6, took a turn on the other side of the dais at last Monday evening's council meeting. After , he addressed council members during the public participation portion.

"The last six years have been a whirlwind. It goes so fast," said Sewell, referring to his service to the community.

To the newly elected council members, he told them their biggest challenge would be gaining knowledge about the history of and its long-running issues.

He also said understanding the unique lifestyles reflected within Ward 6 is important.

"The city staff are the true heroes. They keep the city running, and we would not have weathered the recent economic downturn if it weren't for the steps they took," said Sewell. "They are the vessels of collective conscience. And we've been blessed to have many of the same city staff for a long time."

He said he believed it was imperative to learn about the principles on which Wildwood was founded. "Do independent homework, poll constituents. Go the extra mile to get opinions from those who oppose your opinion."

Sewell told council members that their personal opinions do not always represent what the majority of their constituents are thinking or feeling.

"Go with your instincts, even if it means against the pack," he said.
