4 Schools and Where their Names Came From

Fenton area schools are steeped in history, but do you know why they're named that way?

New schools don’t crop up every day, so it’s a pretty big deal when it comes time to naming them. Some schools are named after the town where they are located, like . Some are named for their location in the district, like . A few schools are named by the students, like , which according to school officials was named after the β€œsummit of excellence” the students would strive towards.

: Named after the Bowles family, who once owned land in the area and was one of Fenton’s founding families. You've probably driven on their street, too, which also happens to run in front of the school.

: Named after the Van Dover family, another Fenton founding family. The current building started out as Vandover Elementary in the 50s. The Van Dovers also have a streetβ€”which the school used to sit on--though a good chunk of it was lost to Hwy 141 and was more or less replaced with Gladiator and Hawkins Roads. : Named after the first principal of Chesterfield Elementary, Miss Garlin Kellison. Kellison worked in Rockwood for 40 years.

: Named after Robert Stanton who worked in Rockwood from 1950-1975 and was the principal at Geggie Elementary at one time.
