The Fickle Mississippi
Mississippi River is expected to crest in St. Louis Wednesday April 24 at approximately 35.5 feet.
The last time I visited the flooding Mississippi was during the Great Flood of ‘93 which crested at 49.6 feet in August of 93. Unfortunately I was not a photographer at the time, and missed the opportunity of photographing it.
Just a few months ago I visited the flood wall in December 2012, mainly to photograph the exposed USS Inaugural, which broke away from its moorings and sunk during the flood of ’93. At that time the Mississippi was experiencing record low levels due to the draught of 2012. It was so low the river traffic, mainly the barges, were having a difficult time navigating the river, and river trade was in danger.
Last Sunday my girlfriend ,Sharon, and I walked the entire graffiti covered flood wall and then drove to Laclede's Landing and walked the Arch grounds and the Landing. I took a lot of photos and uploaded a few of my favorites for you to see.
