The latest technology for cataract surgery now located on the SSM St. Clare campus

People in St. Louis now have a new option for cataract surgery – the LenSx laser procedure. The LenSx located at SSM St. Clare is the only one in St. Louis, and one of only about 100 in the US.

The latest technology that aids in cataract surgery, the LenSx laser machine, is now located in the Surgery Center on the SSM St. Clare campus. LenSx is currently FDA approved to treat cataracts and astigmatism, but there are numerous applications currently being investigated by the FDA, including aiding in corneal transplants, glaucomaand refractive surgery.

With traditional cataract surgery, human error and variability exist. The laser eliminates that variability and is able to aid in the surgery in a precise and reproducible fashion. While the actual cataract removal and insertion of intraocularlens is still a manual process, the laser reduces the ultrasound energy needed to remove the cataractous lens, leading to reduced post-op swelling. Recovery time is not considerably different than traditional cataract surgery; however, because of the reduced swelling, patients are seeing clearer, faster and complications are greatly reduced because of the precision with theLenSx.

The LenSx on St. Clare Health Center’s campus is the only one in St. Louis and one of only about 100 in the United States. Drs. Brent Davidson and Shana Rose of Envision Eye Care are currently accepting patients for the LenSx procedure. Since its inception in February 2013, more than 50 patients have been treated using the LenSx.
