Concord Students Celebrate Year of the Dragon
Students constructed two large paper dragons and paraded through the school last week.
The Lindbergh School District provided a photo and information about students at Concord Elementary School, who built large paper dragons and paraded through the school's corridors last week in celebration of the Chinese New Year, which is the year of the dragon. Jan. 23 started the Chinese New Year.
Early Childhood Education students in Shirley Phillips’ Pre-K class worked with Sheri Strebler’s 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in the Program for Exceptionally Gifted Students (PEGS) to create the paper dragons. PEGS students constructed the dragon heads, and helped ECE students make the body. Then, the students paraded through the halls together, handing out fortune cookies and lucky coins, and wishing their classmates “Gung Hoy Fat Choy!” —that means “Happy New Year” in Chinese.
The Chinese New Year celebration is an annual tradition for Phillips, who has been sharing her Chinese culture with students for 24 years.
