A fall can be life changing for a senior. Learn how to keep your senior loved one safe from falls.
The CDC reports that one out of three adults aged 65 and over fall each year. In addition, falls are leading cause of injury death in that age range. It is imperative that caregivers keep their senior loved ones safe from falls.
There are several ways to reduce the risk of falls. Staying active and exercising is an excellent way to improve balance. There are many options for staying active including walking, gardening and exercise routines designed for seniors. Talk to your senior loved one’s doctor about the best option for their level of mobility.
Medical management is important when analyzing the risk of falls for your senior loved one. Some medications cause dizziness which can be exacerbated by other health risks. Discuss any changes in mobility or dizziness with your senior loved one’s doctor immediately. In some cases, a change in medication may alleviate the problem.

Keep you home safe for your senior loved one. An occupational therapist can visit your home to determine the need for furniture rearrangement, grab bars and improved lighting. If your senior loved one spends time at an adult day care or community center, take time to assess the design of the facility to ensure the optimum fall prevention.
