Lindbergh ECE earns National Design Award

Learning By Design magazine recently awarded the Lindbergh Early Childhood Education building a “2012 Outstanding Project” award for General Excellence in the Early Childhood School category. The building, which was designed by Ittner Architects and opened in January 2011, serves students ages 2 through Pre-K. It was constructed as part of Prop R 2008, a $31 million bond issue.

The building features 14 classrooms, a fully enclosed outdoor playground, restrooms in each classroom, LEED green building design features and a state-of-the-art security system.

“The design is very simple and economical, yet the splash of primary colors on the front of the building creates an excitement, bringing its own individual identity on an existing campus,” the magazine said.

Learning By Design magazine is published twice a year by Stratton Publishing & Marketing Inc. and the National School Boards Association.

LEAP Mural Decorates School

Jack DuCharme, fifth-grader at St. Catherine Laboure School, recently had the chance to beautify the entryway to Dressel School with his creative original design. Jack participates in the Lindbergh Eager Acheivers Program (LEAP) for gifted students. His mural design was originally part of a contest last spring to design a T-shirt for the LEAP program. Michelle Ryder Schoeck, coordinator of Lindbergh Schools' gifted programs, said that the teachers decided Jack's design would work well as a mural because it represents all the themes of LEAP: backyard science, oceans, structures, journey north, medieval, and space exploration. LEAP parent Shelley Dairaghi enlarged Jack's drawing to cover the surface and then painted the mural. The mural was made possible by the LEAP Parent Group.

Stu-Co Voted in as Vice President of Regional Chapter

The Lindbergh High School student council was voted to serve as vice president of the regional student council chapter during the 2013 school year. The LHS representatives performed an officer campaign dance at the annual Gateway Convention, which was held at Northwest High School on Nov. 3. In addition, seven students led topical discussion breakout sessions at the conference.

Math Competitors Secure Awards

Six members of the Lindbergh Math Club competed in the Excellence in Mathematics Competition at St. Louis Community College-Forest Park on Nov. 10, and all six won awards. Eighth-grader Rounak Bera competed against ninth-graders and placed third, and senior Tiffany Lee placed 10th. The LHS team of juniors won their division. That team included Shravan Dommaraju, who placed second individually; Sam Stephens, who placed third indidvidually; Eric Lewis, who placed sixth individually; and Katie Hufker, who placed 20th individually.

Sunday Night Lights Shares Success With Local Charities

Sunday Night Lights was such a success in 2012 that the event was able to send donations to three charities that support children with cancer, including Friends of Kids with Cancer, Rainbows for Kids, and Camp Rainbow.

The third annual event in October provided a fun and exciting high school football game experience for young children with cancer and other blood-borne diseases. Children paired up with Lindbergh students for an unforgettable night as football players, cheerleaders, Flyerettes, and members of the Spirit of St. Louis Marching Band.
