Managing Resistance to Medical Care

As our loved ones age, it is common for them to require increased medical care.  Chronic illnesses often necessitate an increased number of routine appointments and testing.  A new medical diagnosis may result in additional scans and initial consults.  No one enjoys a visit to the doctor, but resistance to medical care can be a significant problem faced by caregivers of seniors.

First and foremost, be understanding with your senior loved one.  They may be struggling with feelings of fear and sadness due to their diagnosis.  The loss of independence related to an illness is challenging for many seniors.  Fears of becoming a burden and the cost of medical care may also factor into resistance.

Your job as a caregiver is to be patient, but persistent with your senior loved one.  Spend time talking to them about their concerns and ways that you can alleviate their fears and worries.  It may be beneficial to talk to your loved one’s doctor about resistance and brainstorm solutions.  Enlist help from family and friends to help with the process.
