Managing Resistance to Medical Care

Is your senior loved one resisting medical attention? This article will give you insight into a common problem faced by caregivers.

As our loved ones age, it is common for them to require increased medical care.Β  Chronic illnesses often necessitate an increased number of routine appointments and testing.Β  A new medical diagnosis may result in additional scans and initial consults.Β  No one enjoys a visit to the doctor, but resistance to medical care can be a significant problem faced by caregivers of seniors.

First and foremost, be understanding with your senior loved one.Β  They may be struggling with feelings of fear and sadness due to their diagnosis.Β  The loss of independence related to an illness is challenging for many seniors.Β  Fears of becoming a burden and the cost of medical care may also factor into resistance.

Your job as a caregiver is to be patient, but persistent with your senior loved one.Β  Spend time talking to them about their concerns and ways that you can alleviate their fears and worries.Β  It may be beneficial to talk to your loved one’s doctor about resistance and brainstorm solutions.Β  Enlist help from family and friends to help with the process.

If your senior loved one needs medical care during the day while you work, consider an adult day care center.Β  The nurses on staff can help monitor medications and symptoms, which may reduce the number of visits to the doctor. Bon Vivant Adult Day Club is the premier adult day care center located in Fenton, MO.Β  The cost of adult day care is less than half of assisted living and less than one fourth of the price of nursing home care.Β  Payment options include Missouri Aged and Disable Waiver, long term care insurance, veteran’s benefits and private pay.
