Serious FOOLS to Play Washers for Fellow Firefighter

Fenton firemen want your help to raise money for Captain Steve Grimes, who is battling cancer.

Show Me FOOLS and in Fenton are joining forces to raise money for Captain Steven Grimes, a firefighter who has served the for more than 15 years. Grimes was diagnosed with leukemia and has been unable to work since March 2010.

“Everyone who meets Steve loves him,” said Paul Seemayer, a fellow Fenton firefighter and member of FOOLS, a national training organization for firefighters. FOOLS stands for Fraternal Order Of Leatherheads Society. They take their name from the iconic leather helmet that firemen used to wear. FOOLS was started in 1995 in Florida and Show Me FOOLS is one of four Missouri chapters.

“He had a bone marrow transplant and was doing great, however, within the past month, cancer cells were found in his cerebral spinal fluid and he may have to undergo another marrow transplant,” said Seemayer.

The tournament will be from 5 to 11 p.m. June 22. Registration starts at 4 p.m. There is a $15 per person, or $30 per team, charge to enter the tournament and a cash prize will be awarded to the winning team.

Washers is a game where players toss 2.5-inch-wide metal washer into a 4-inch-wide cup, and is similar to horseshoes. The object is to land one’s washers in or near the cup to score points.

According to official website for Washers, no one really knows how the game started: "The history of the game is cloaked in mystery, but lends itself to colorful conjecture. Betcha I can toss this here washer into that oil can over yonder," someone might have wagered years ago."

d.Dooley’s will donate a percentage of all food and drink sold at the bar to the firefighters, so you don’t have to play in order to help with the fund raiser. An employee at d. Dooley’s said the bar and grill typically donates 20 prcent when they host a charity fund raiser. d. Dooley’s will also provide the washers and the tournament will be held on the patio in front of the restaurant.
