Substance Abuse Among Seniors

Did you know that substance abuse rates are on the rise?

Substance abuse among the senior population is a growing problem in the U.S. As 78 million baby boomers approach retirement, the rate of all mental health issues will naturally rise.  The baby boomers were also the first generation to be more accepting of substance use, which also contributes to rising numbers of abuse.

The good news is that substance abuse treatment is very effective among seniors.  The challenge is that many times, the problem in overlooked in this age bracket.  Family members will often dismiss memory loss or confusion as aging, rather than the side effects of alcohol.  Doctors may not consider substance abuse as a factor to medical problems.

Substance abuse problems may develop later in life, while others have struggled with abuse issues throughout life.  Seniors may turn to substances due to a variety of issues, including depression, feelings of overwhelming loss, maladjustment to retirement and loneliness.  In addition, seniors are often unaware of the fact that the ability to metabolize alcohol changes with age.  (Source).
