The shift to online and hybrid learning has been challenging for teachers, students, and parents alike. It’s important to remember that communication is key. Reach out to your child's teacher and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Here are a few tips to help parents help kids focus and better work remotely.
Use routine to stay organized
Studies show that maintaining a daily schedule is a vital part of success for both adults and children. This is especially true for students attending virtual or hybrid school. It can help improve their mental health and keep them on task when completing school assignments.
Stay motivated
Provide positive, detailed feedback to your children. Don’t just say, “good job” say “I really like the story you wrote for your English class, it was very creative.” Celebrate big projects and successes, this shows them you care and are there for support.
Establish rules and goals
Younger children do well when their expectations are clear. Remind them to adhere to time schedules, post their class schedules in their work area, stay seated during class time, take short breaks and get daily exercise outdoors when possible to stay active.
Some teenagers multitask, working on classwork while using social media. This can lead to making more mistakes, taking longer to finish and remembering less of the material. Have a conversation with your teen about setting boundaries with electronics during class and homework time.
Creating a space to learn
Children are empowered to learn when they feel safe in a place of that gives them competence, autonomy and belonging. A few evidence-based guidelines suggest kids pin-up artwork or find creative ways to personalize their learning space.
