Updated: Weather Service Advisory Stresses 'Dangerous Heat' Levels

With temps expected to top 100 over the next few days, cooling centers and swimming pools are places to beat the heat.

The dangerous heat will continue throuout the weekend and to the Fourth of July as the National Weather Service (NWS) warning residents to take measures now to deal with the extreme heat wave tht will keep temperatures above 100 degrees for several more days. The NWS warns that heat-related illnesses are "a real threat."

"The effects of excessive heat are cumulative," the NWS warned in its advisory. Do not wait until the heat wave has lasted several days. Take action now to protect your health and continue to do so over the weekend."

The NWS heat advisory announcement continues: "Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water to reduce risk during outdoor work. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911 immediately."

There are a variety of places that residents can seek refuge from the extreme heat. Residents can receive information about cooling centers or energy assistance by calling the United Way at 1-800-427-4426. or by dialing 2-1-1 from a land line phone.

Today's NWS heat advisory remains in effect for Friday and Saturday with temperatures between 100 and 108 degree expected to be widespread. The NWS also says humidity levels also will be higher, producing heat index values between 100 and 110. It said the high heat and humidity will likely continue for Sunday and into next week as well.

As the heat wave rages on, a lot of people are flocking to local swimming pools.

Springdale Park and Pool reported a "busier than normal weekday," Wednesday as residents took advantage of the cool Springdale waters. Admission to Springdale, 2280 S. Old Hwy. 141, Fenton, is $7 per person for those 4 years old and older with $1 off for those bring a canned good for a Springdale food drive.

At , the swimming pool rates are $5 for adults and $4 for children 3 to 15 years of age for residents or $8 for adults and $7 for kids for non-City of Fenton residents. There also is a family of four package that is $15 for City of Fenton residents or $25 for non-residents. Barring any special events or swim meets, the RiverChase pool is open noon to 8 p.m.
