What is Dementia?

Are you concerned about memory loss in your senior loved one? Could it be dementia? This article discusses the definition of dementia, a common problem among the senior population.

Dementia is a term that we hear often among the senior population.Β  It is not a disease, per say, but rather a general term used to describe a loss of mental ability that impacts daily functioning.Β  Memory loss is the most common symptom of dementia.Β

Mild memory loss is common among seniors and is not necessarily indicative of dementia.Β  If your senior loved one is struggling with memory loss, a visit to the doctor is the first step in identifying the severity of the problem.Β  Alzheimer ’s disease is the most common form of dementia, followed by vascular dementia, which occurs as a result of a stroke.Β

While not everyone develops dementia, the risk does increase with age.Β  If your senior loved one is struggling with memory loss, it is imperative to seek help immediately, as dementia tends to get worse over time (source).Β

Angela Denicola, RN has worked with dementia patients throughout her entire career.Β  She shares this advice with caregivers:

β€œI encourage families to see help as soon as they notice increase in memory loss or inability to engage in routine hobbies.Β  As dementia progresses, seniors often develop new behaviors to cope with cognitive impairment.Β  These behaviors, such as shadowing or always wanting to go home (even if they at home) create a situation that is difficult for the caregiver to cope with and sets the stage for limited care taking options.”  Β Β
