What do you want for your childβs future?
The other day I took a call from a prospective parent.Β I had not given her tour, and she was calling to talk to the director and ask a few questions.Β She wanted to know if I knew the national average ACT or SAT scores for Montessori alumni.Β I had to admit that I donβt, and I am not aware of anyone who has narrowed down that population for that sort of study.Β I asked her what she was looking for in that question.Β She told me that what she really wanted was for her daughter to be happy.Β Β

Ah.Β Now that I can address.Β
I told her my current favorite alumna story.Β A few years ago, I had a young woman come into the office, someone whom, as a child, I had sat with in the classroom, chased around the playground, and put down for nap.Β Now, she was a couple years out of high school, and she told me this story.Β She had left Campbell and attended the local public schools β a very ordinary sort of thing to do.Β She graduated and enrolled in the local community college β again, a very ordinary sort of thing to do.Β She told me that when she was about half-way through the first semester she realized she wasnβt happy. Β And then, she said this extraordinary thing: βI knew if I wasnβt happy, I wasnβt going to learn anything.βΒ So she pulled herself together, transferred to a four-year college at the semester, moved out of her parentsβ house, and was working hard in pursuit a double major β and she was quite happy.Β Β Β

Who would be disappointed in that?Β What parent would be disappointed in an eighteen-year-old child who could perform that kind of assessment of her situation and have the wherewithal to get up and change it?Β In a time when we hear more and more stories of kids βreturning to the nestβ, isnβt that what we want for our children?Β Self-awareness and self-knowledge, confidence in the face of uncertainty, courage enough to make necessary changes β these are signs of strong character and a productive life.Β These are characteristics school can and should support.Β These are goals we should have for our children.
Montessori schools often focus (and with good reason) on the famous Montessori alumni β people like Julia Child, the co-founders of Google, Amazon, and Wikipedia, and so on β people who live extraordinary lives.Β But it isnβt always about living an extraordinary life.Β Sometimes itβs about living an ordinary life extraordinarily well.Β
