Business Continues as Usual at Florissant City Council Meeting

Council votes on seven bills on Monday night's agenda.

Although the Florissant City Council had a number of presentations and celebrations last night, the group still had a number of bills on the agenda.

Here’s what happened with agenda items at last night’s meeting:

  • Bill 8712, proposed by Ward 3 City Councilman , failed. The ordinance would have provided a reduced fee of $30 to nonprofit organizations that had off-site tent sales. Schneider said it would have been his 1,000th bill to pass as a city councilman.
  • The council passed Substitute Bill 8713 with a vote of 7-1. The ordinance adds members to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for a total of nine members and eliminates the alternate positions. Previously, Councilman Schneider had suggested to amend the bill to allow for each member to represent a particular ward of the city, but Ward 9 City Councilman Ben Hernandez and Ward 7 City Councilwoman Karen McKay opposed this change. The bill passed without the recommended amendment.
  • The saga regarding the definition of continues. City councilors voted to postpone the bill until the May 23 council meeting, so that the council has time to discuss in a work or executive session.
  • The council unanimously passed Bill 8717, which amends sections of a previous ordinance regarding city employee’s pay. This amendment allows for employees who are promoted to a new job classification to receive a pay increase of 5 percent.
  • Councilors approved to table Bill 8718. Ward 5 Councilman Keith Schildroth said that he would like to send it back to the planning and zoning commission to oversee changes the council requested.
  • The council approved Bill 8723, which appropriates more than $15,000 to the children’s arts programs that will be held during the Valley of Flowers festival. Ward 4 Councilman Keith English said that council approves this appropriation annually.
  • The council also approved Bill 8724, which allows for the transfer of a special use permit to United Conoco Mart for the operation of a gas station.
