Doughnut Cupboard Offers More Than a Pastry
From sandwiches to omelets, the restaurant gives a perfect start to the morning.
In driving by on Lindbergh Boulevard, you might think that it only offers doughnuts, but it has a full menu for breakfast and lunch every day.
What's more, the breakfast menu features a variety of options that are vegetarian-friendly, from egg sandwiches and omelets to pancakes and hash browns.
Most breakfast combos and omelets come with a side of meat or meat in them, but The Doughnut Cupboard includes options on its menu without meat or with hash browns substituted for the meat.

My guest and I arrived at The Doughnut Cupboard around 9:45 a.m. on a weekday, expecting a lull in business, but the dining room was near capacity.

We walked up to the counter to make our selections: a "No. 2" two egg-and-cheese bagel sandwich ($2.26) and a custard-filled doughnut (90 cents) for me, and a "No. 5" bacon, one egg and cheese on toast sandwich ($1.63) and a small cinnamon roll (90 cents) for my guest.
With a couple of bottles of juice and tax, our order came to $9.65, which we both thought was pretty reasonable for everything we got.
My two egg-and-cheese bagel sandwich was delicious. It was warm and fresh with two lightly fried eggs, some melted cheddar cheese and a soft bagel.
Of course, I had to get the restaurant's namesake, a doughnut, to go along with my sandwich. My favorite type of doughnut is a custard-filled one with chocolate frosting, so I decided to try the restaurant's take on it, which was absolutely perfect.
The doughnut itself was light and flaky, a great complement to the rich, creamy custard that filled it. There was just a thin layer of chocolate frosting on the top, so it wasn't completely overwrought with sugar.
My guest also enjoyed her sandwich and cinnamon roll, She said the egg was perfect, the bacon was crisp and the cinnamon roll was excellent.
If you're looking for a simple but delicious breakfast, The Doughnut Cupboard gives chains such as and a run for their money.
I'm looking forward to going back there soon to try more vegetarian-friendly options for breakfast and lunch.
