Florissant Receives Upgrade on Property Classification

This year, Florissant received a Class 4 rating for its residential, commercial and industrial properties after being a Class 5.

Last week, Mayor Tom Schneider announced toward the end of the Florissant City Council meeting that the city’s residential, commercial and industrial properties received an upgrade on its building code effectiveness grading classification.

In 2007, the city received ratings of Class 5 for all categories, and this year all were upgraded to Class 4. The buildings are rated on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the highest.

The City received the rating from Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO), which is an insurance supported organization that provides advisory insurance underwriting and rating information to insurers.

In a memo from the city’s public works department, reasons for the upgrade include hiring and maintenance of qualified staff, adoption of unmodified current building codes and training and certification programs.

According to the memo, the ISO recommends a savings of up to 6 percent for earthquake insurance costs for Missouri residents.
