Government Shutdown Could Lead to Local, Regional Problems

St. Louis faces a few uphill battles if Congress doesn't agree by midnight.

If the United States Congress does not reach an agreement by midnight Friday, federal services will shut down across the country affecting everyone, including the city and residents of Florissant.

Here’s what’s at risk during a shutdown:

  • The St. Louis Arch would be shutdown as it’s registered as a national landmark.
  • The U.S. Postal Service would continue to operate as it’s not subsidized by federal dollars.
  • Social Security checks would continue to be processed due to long-term federal funding.
  • IRS operations will be scaled back. The tax deadline of April 18 would remain, but refunds could be delayed until the government is fully funded.
  • An estimated 800,000 furloughs and layoffs are expected for federal employees across the country. Some will still have to show up for work, such as homeland security and FBI, but not be paid for it.
