Hazelwood Central Wins Boys Track Championship For Third Year In A Row

Hawks earned big points in the sprint relays and in the individual sprints to make it three straight state titles, while rivals McCluer and McCluer North finished second and fourth.

It sure was hot, and it certainly wasn't easy, but the boys track team finished off another spectacular season Saturday by winning their third consecutive state championship.

The Hawks totaled 38 points, with a championship win in the 4x200 meter relay, to narrowly outshine rivals and , who finished with 34 points and 32 points respectively, to finish second and fourth, in the annual Missouri State High School Activities Association state championship meet at Lincoln University's Dwight T. Reed Stadium.

Team members Brandon Chunn, Cole Davis, Aaron Floyd, Marc Franks, Matt Quarells, DeAndre Wade, Sean Wills and Chris Wright all contributed in a relay, individual sprint or both, in a championship effort that wasn’t completed until Davis, Quarells, Chunn and Franks brought home a second-place finish in the day’s final event -- the 4x400 meter relay -- to seal the win.

Quarrells, Wade, Franks and Wills earned the biggest points of the day for Central when they won the 4x200 meter relay early in the afternoon that gave the Hawks team a lead it would never relinquish.

McCluer came close with a state championship win by senior Darrion Dillard in the triple jump, and McCluer North did the same with first- and second-place finishes by junior Aaron Mallett in the 110-meter and 300-meter high hurdles.

But neither the Comets nor the Stars could overcome Hazelwood Central’s depth and speed in the sprints.
