Robohawks Fall Short of the Championship Mark
Hazelwood Central finishes FIRST Championship in the top 50, but its captain receives a special accolade.
Although more than 300 teams from around the world descended upon downtown St. Louis for the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Championship, one winner was declared on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Hazelwood Central Robohawks weren’t in the final running.
The Cheesy Poofs from San Jose, CA, WildStang from Schaumburg, IL, and the Greybots from Atascadero, CA, came together to form the winning combination on Saturday night.
The finished the competition at 5-5 and placed in the top 50 at the 41st place.

Team captain and junior Luther Banner received an individual accolade as he along with 10 others received the FIRST Dean’s List Award. Named after founder Dean Kamen, celebrates students leaders’ passion to achieve the FIRST ideals.
Banner beat out more than 100 nominees for the honor. He will work with past Dean’s List winners to improve and advance FIRST for other youth, as well as receive a letter of recommendation to the college or employer of his choice.
