The Situation with (Former) Club Situation

At the meeting, several residents surrounding the Derhake Road neighborhood voiced their concerns and displeasure of the club-like business at 2950 Derhake Rd.

One by one, five residents spoke to the councilors during the hearing from citizens session to speak to the bad atmosphere caused by the place that has housed clubs such as . 

Residents spoke of the loud noise that disrupted the neighborhood as well as the trash that could be found after a night of partying by its patrons. In addition, a couple of residents spoke out and said their property assessments had dipped by approximately one-third. 

“I’m not against anyone having a good time, but it’s having an adverse affect on our neighborhood,” said Betty Via, a 20-year homeowner of 2755 Derhake Rd.

According to Florissant reports, from January 2010 to July 2011, the property at 2950 Derhake had 25 incidents of loud music, including 11 warnings from police. The report also shows four arrests at the club.

Florissant resident Elizabeth Bowling said that the location has a pattern of opening, closing and revamping itself to close again later.

“Nothing lasts terribly long there,” Bowling, who’s lived in her home on Derhake for the past 18 years, said. “It’s just not the right location or good location for that type of place.” 

She continued to say that with her doors and windows closed, she could still hear and feel the vibrations of sound from the club.

Currently, the club sits vacant, but it has new signage for “Brioni Nights.” There is also a flier posted on the door of the club stating that Club Situation is currently closed but will reopen as Brioni Nights.

No workers or managers could be reached upon visits to the building.

City Clerk Karen Goodwin as well as Ward 8 Councilman Mark Schmidt said that at the time of publication, there has been no application to renew the liquor license, and to the city’s knowledge, there’s no new client or business set to open. 

Although there’s no business set to open at this time, the residents have made it clear that they don’t want to see another club move into that location.

“It needs to be a different type of business,” Via said.

She said that a restaurant such as a bar and grill would be a great addition to the neighborhood rather than a nightclub. 

Bowling said she would be interested in seeing a good daytime business location such as a retail establishment or a restaurant.
