HSD students complete 2011 Bridge Program Summer Academy at University of Missouri-St. Louis

Fifty-eight high school students from the Hazelwood School District successfully completed the 2011 Bridge Program Summer Academy at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The university’s Bridge Program provides ninth- through twelfth-grade students with educational experiences that create academic proficiency crucial to success in college. Summer academy students are freshmen and sophomores who attended classes and workshops at the university five days a week for four weeks. Available courses include mathematics, science, writing skills, career development and college planning. Students also meet with professionals in various career fields, attend hands-on workshops and take field trips. The program culminated with a recognition ceremony at the Airport Marriott St. Louis Hotel. HSD students who completed the program at Hazelwood West High School are:

Other parts of the Bridge program include a Saturday academy, a parent academy, a parent support group, after school clubs and community service opportunities. All Bridge program sections are designed to encourage students to finish high school, pursue a college career, prepare and motivate them to search for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, support mathematics and science instruction in school and advocate developing academic, personal, interpersonal and professional skills.
