St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley Visits HSD Middle School Local Government Fair

St. Louis County Executive Charlie A. Dooley paid a brief visit to the to help kick off the 2011 Missouri Youth Engaged in Local Government (MY LOGO) Student Projects Fair.
The MY LOGO program teaches students about local government and involves them in community problem-solving. They learn what local government is and what it does. They identify research and debate local issues and make recommendations for resolutions. They learn to work collaboratively to solve their problems, are exposed to possible career choices and see the value of becoming engaged citizens.
As Dooley roamed the multi-purpose room, microphone in hand, he asked random students questions about the county β what the population is, how many school districts, fire districts, cities and county council districts are there? He also took questions about topics such as tax-increment finance districts and recreational facilities.

After Dooley departed, Students Activities in Investigative Learning (SAIL) from all six HSD middle schools presented the projects they selected and researched. Groups from each school came forward and passed around the microphone as they took turns narrating.
The MY LOGO program is a collaborative effort among the following organizations β the Citizenship Education Clearing House, the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Education, University of Missouri Extension and the University of Missouri-St. Louisβ Center for Character and Citizenship.
