Your mind is racing with all you need to do. Β Your thoughts are often future focused on what could happen. Β Sometimes these thoughts are just thoughts, other times theyβre quite negative. Β Your body feels tense. Β You notice your stomach is pulled in and youβre not breathing right. Β Thereβs tension around your throat and shoulders. Β Youβre not even focused on whatβs happening around you. Youβre totally in your own head. Β Someone taps your shoulder and you startle.

Our lives are full of a lot of stuff happening. Β More than likely, youβve felt some of what I described at some point during the day. Β Probably most days.

This isnβt healthy. Β This alone, regardless of what you eat can lead to dis-ease and illness. Β Iβm here to tell you that you can calm down and it all begins very simply.

BREATHE
I know youβre like, is that it? Β I breathe all the time. Β But I want you to become AWARE of your breath. Β At that moment when you are feeling most stressed, check in with your body. Β I bet you feel tension in your stomach, lungs, shoulders. Β You may even notice that youβre holding your breath. Β And, if you are breathing, youβre probably breathing through your mouth.
Well this actually leads to MORE stress and anxiety and hereβs why:
Your lungs take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Β When you take shallow breathes through your mouth the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide is thrown off. Β Insufficient oxygen in your body causes your blood vessels and cells to constrict. Β Your brain is most effected by this. Β Your sympathetic nervous system (or your fight or flight response) is activated and feelings of tension, irritability, anxiety, and depression can occur. Β
Shallow breathing also uses only the top part of your lungs. Β This turns on your fight or flight response and brings on all of these negative emotions too. Β Deep breathing forces air to the bottom of your lungs. Β This process turns on the parasympathetic system which calms the body, relaxes the heart rate, soothes, and relaxes. Β
Spiritually, when you stop, breathe, and meditate in a prayerful way, the Power thatβs within is activated and your focus can instantly move away from your anxious self.
And thatβs so much more productive and HEALING!
I encourage you RIGHT NOW to check in with your breathing. Β Are you breathing deeply with your mouth closed? Β
Take time to consciously do this for a few minutes per day. Β It is vital for your health. Β After a while, as stress rises, your automatic response will be to remind yourself to breath. Β This may need to happen many times during the day.
By the way, because your mouth needs to be closed while doing this, if youβre in a verbal disagreement, and you take time to stop talking and breathe, it could work wonders! Β Try it!
