Patch Picks: 10 Things to do Labor Day Weekend

There are many things to do around the area this Labor Day weekend.

Although the first Labor Day was observed in Boston on September 5, 1882, it did not become a federal holiday until 1894. Due to the outcome of the Pullman Strike, where 13 strikers were killed and 57 were wounded by U.S. Marshalls and Army troops, President Cleveland pushed to make reconciliation a top priority and six days after the strike, Labor Day was a national holiday.

  1. Final Swim: Now is your last chance to enjoy the public swimming pools! Take the weekend to relax on the lazy river at Hazelwood’s White Birch Bay’s Aquatic Center, which will close its doors on Monday, 5 p.m. Wear the kiddies out on the Swedish-made 360 degree bubble slide or let them entertain you as a giant bucket dumps massive amounts of water onto their laughing faces.

See The Cards: Grab a cold beer and watch the Cardinals labor it out playing the Cincinnati Reds September 2-4, and the Milwaukee Brewers on Labor Day game at 4:15 p.m. Cheer for Hazelwood West’s 2002 alum, , whose family hosts the at .   • Come on downtown on Monday and celebrate with the St. Louis Labor Council. There will be a parade starting at 8:30 a.m., and the theme this year is β€œWe Are One!” After the parade, head to Poelker Park where there will be a refreshments and a 50-piece orchestra set up from 10:00 until noon. The event is sponsored by the Central Labor Council and Local Greater St. Louis Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

  • Take the fam for a scenic drive and end up at beautiful Augusta Winery for their Labor Day Barbecue. The luncheon is from noon to 3 p.m., on Sunday. Many delicious family favorites will be served on the patio. The price is $15 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. This year’s menu includes all-stars such as all beef hot dogs, cheeseburgers, sweet potato fries, and teriyaki buffalo wings.
