Perspective: Hazelwood City Council Members Mary Singleton and Robert Aubuchon
Soon to begin a new term, both members discuss economic prosperity and green alternatives for Hazelwood.
MARY SINGLETON
If youβre taking a stroll in Howdershell Park and notice a friendly redhead with glasses and a smile, you may have spotted Councilwoman Mary Singleton taking a brisk walk, as she often does. Singleton represents Ward 8. She is a member of Hazelwoodβs newly launched Green Committee as well as an environmental enthusiastΒ and will be finishing her first term this April. Since she has no opposition for her seat, she will remain in the position for a second go round on Hazelwood City Council.
βElection campaigns are fun, but they are also expensive and a lot of work,β she said. βI am hoping the fact that no one is running against me means Iβm doing a good job for my constituents.β

Singleton said she filed for re-election because, βIt takes awhile to learn what you need to know to serve as an elected official.β
βAfter three years, I am really feeling more confident now in this position," she said. "I enjoy helping constituents solve problems, and enjoy working with others on council and with our incredible city employees.β

Singleton said she looks forward to the cityβs economy continuing to improve soΒ Hazelwood residents can continue to receive quality services. She is also very excited about the potential of more collaboration among municipalities in providing services.
βIf we can purchase things, such as road salt, together, Iβm sure we can save taxpayers a lot of money,β she said.
Since she joined city council, Singleton has been instrumental in helping start up . She is proud of the restaurants and other businesses for which the council has approved permits, she said.
Singleton, who decided to run because she's lived in the area most of her adult life, also noted her affection for volunteerism.
βI am very proud of the vast number of volunteers in our city who serve on boards and commissions, giving countless hours of service to the community," she said. Singleton loves Hazelwood, so she wants to work hard to keep it a nice area in which to live and work, she said.

ROBERT AUBUCHON
If you have shown up to any event the Northwest Chamber of Commerce hosts, you almost certainly met the always-smiling Robert Aubuchon. Councilman Aubuchon, who represents Ward 2, has been on Hazelwood City Council for 14 years. The incumbent, who is running unopposed, has devoted hours and hours of his personal time to serving his constituents. For this man, itβs all about getting to know his constituents and addressing their concerns, he said.
When asked if he was looking forward to an election, Aubuchon said he's glad there won't be one but enjoys the interface with Hazelwood residents that an election affords.
βAn election is always a challenge, and it takes a lot of time.β he said. βIt does give you the opportunity to go door-to-door and meet many of the residents and talk to them personally.β
Aubuchon said he appreciates the time he spends listening to residents because it gives him the opportunity to hear complaints and compliments, both of which give him a good indication of how well he is doing on the council.
Aubuchon told Patch that he filed for re-election because he enjoys keeping up with what is happening in Hazelwood and wants to continue his job because he feels he is doing a good job for the citizens.
βI look forward to better and new growth in the city,β he said. βNew businesses and new programs for the community will be a great asset.
"Itβs a tough economy, and we, as a council, are looking for new things to happen as things do get better.β
During the time that Aubuchon has served on council, heβs supported and helped initiate a number of ordinances and proclamations. Aubuchon said he is excited about the Green Committee, which he feels will be very good for the city.
Keeping signage fair and equal among local businesses is something Aubuchon is also very passionate about.
βWe do not need large and overpowering signs throughout the city," he said. "We try to keep it fair for everyone. If you give a larger sign to one company, everyone else wants the same thing.β
In addition, during his years of service, Aubuchon and the council have welcomed new businesses, such as a new Quik Trip, which will soon open on North Lindbergh. During his time on the council many businesses have also expanded, which Aubuchon said is great for the city's economy.
βIt has been a challenge at times, but it is always a learning experience," he said. "We have a great council where the members do seem to communicate to get things done in the city.
"We work with a wonderful and talented staff to keep the city running smoothly."
