Whiz Kid: Nine Hazelwood School District Students Earn Duke University Recognition

The middle school students scored well enough on the ACT test to earn state recognition in Duke University's Talent Identification Program.

Whiz Kid and School:

  • Trenden Everett, Hazelwood East Middle School
  • Kamaria Buchanan, Hazelwood Southeast Middle
  • Achea Elliott, Hazelwood Southeast Middle
  • Zhane Harris, Hazelwood Southeast Middle
  • Sean Stewart, Hazelwood Southeast Middle
  • Matthew Craig, Hazelwood North Middle School
  • Grant Hartman, Hazelwood North Middle School
  • Miranda Conley, Hazelwood Northwest Middle School
  • Kaitlyn Thurmon, Hazelwood Northwest Middle School

Accomplishment: These nine middle school students earned state recognition in Duke University’s Talent Identification Program (TIP). HSD students who earned state recognition scored in the 95th percentile on the ACT, according to a HSD statement. Matthew also earned grand recognition for his scores. His English score is equal to or higher than 99 percent of his peers who took the ACT English exam.

Key to Awesomeness: The students had to calm their nerves and focus on the test. Each student commented on being nervous but added that once they overcame the jitters, they were able to focus on the task at hand.

Students start as talent search participants and their composite test scores determine whether they receive state and/or grand recognition. Missouri is one of 16 states with the largest talent search enrollments, according to the HSD statement.Β
