Today's riddle: Why do some birds fly south for the winter? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Northland donut shop frustrated after being broken into for 2nd time (fox4kc.com) — A Northland Duck Donuts off North Antioch Road in Kansas City is recovering after its front door was smashed in a 3 a.m. Sunday break-in, the second in about a year. Nothing was stolen, but the owner expects a $1,000 door replacement and says repeated vandalism is straining an already fragile small business.
2. Local teen celebrates kidney transplant at Kansas City Kidney Walk (kctv5.com) — A Kansas City teen who recently received a life-changing kidney transplant joined hundreds of walkers at the Kansas City Kidney Walk in the Power and Light District, celebrating her recovery. The event raised funds and awareness for kidney disease, with organizers expecting about $200,000 to support patients, medical education, and research that can benefit families across Kansas City and beyond.
3. Missouri's free-orchard idea spreads nationwide, putting 1 million people near fruit trees (thecooldown.com) — An idea that started in Kansas City—turning vacant lots into free community orchards—now puts over a million people nationwide within easy reach of fruit trees. With 248 orchards and thousands of trees in Kansas City alone, students and neighbors describe picking fruit at lunch and transforming empty parcels into shared, productive spaces for local food and connection.
4. Kansas City, MO Hosts 18th Un-Dumpster Day Recycling Event (wasteadvantagemag.com) — Kansas City residents gathered today at South Broadland Presbyterian's parking lot for the 18th Un-Dumpster Day, donating reusable items to 15 local nonprofits instead of sending them to landfills. Organizers say the effort has already diverted 30–40 tons of usable goods, directly supporting neighbors recovering from homelessness and funding local programs through thrift stores.
5. Pedestrian struck, killed on K-7 Highway in Bonner Springs (kshb.com) — A 24-year-old Springfield man was struck and killed Saturday night while crossing K-7 Highway in Bonner Springs, a short drive from Kansas City. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the northbound Chevrolet driver from Leavenworth was uninjured, and Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers is reminding residents they can share anonymous tips through its hotline or P3Tips app.
