Ursuline Falls to Rival St. Joe's in Field Hockey

The Angels make an early goal stand up in a 1-0 victory over the Bears Thursday at St. Joe's.

One word kept coming up in a post-game conversation Thursday with field hockey coach Roxanne Naeger.

"Finish," Naeger said. "Yesterday we were able to finish and today we were not."

Emily Stephens was the finisher for the Bears Wednesday in a 2-1 victory over Ursuline Academy.

But nobody was able to get the ball in the cage past Angel goalkeeper Josie Mullen Thursday.

"We had plenty of opportunities," Naeger said. "We had one go just wide of the left post and another go just wide of the right post. It will come."

Berkeley Combs scored 13 minutes into the game for the Angels and  Mullen and a stingy Angel defense would make the goal stand for the remaining 47 minutes.

"We have a lot of seniors on this team but most of them are not very experienced," St. Joseph's coach Maggie Potter said. "We had a phenomenal group of seniors last year. I really am enjoying this year's seniors. They have great personalities and they are getting their chance to play."

The new look Angels are making the most of it as they also were coming off of a good victory, 2-1 over Marquette.

Naeger had a long talk with her team after the loss but was still encouraged with much of the team's play Thursday.

"We have been working a lot on fitness and the girls did not seem a bit tired today," Naeger said. "The defense played really well today. We just need to finish."

There is that word again.
